It is a universal fact that the new year is a time of reflection on past events, present obligations, and future hopes and plans. Setting resolutions for the new year is an age-old tradition dating back to the ancient Babylonians from over 4,000 years ago, who made promises to their gods that were focused on returning borrowed items and paying debts, with the hopes of being granted a favorable year. The Romans later linked resolutions to January 1st, a date named for the double-faced god Janus: the god of beginnings, endings, doorways, and transitions.

Over the centuries, the tradition evolved from religious vows to self-improvement goals, commencing a universal tradition for renewal and hope for a fresh start that continues to this day.

Fast forward to 2026

Thinking of all the inspiring women in my life, I was interested in what sayings and philosophies many of these women use to motivate themselves throughout the year. Many of us — men and women alike — often turn to mantras, books, podcasts and tried-and-true, homespun philosophies to help us attain goals, plow forward after a setback, bite our tongue, laugh out loud in the face of negativity, and generally keep buggering on! (Thank you, Winston Churchill. KBO!).

Mixing wit and wisdom alike (both are equally essential, IMHO), I’ve stitched together a “quilt” of wise aphorisms that inspiring women have told me help them get through their days, weeks, months and years.
