Bernice Gamins Schweber, 92, of Newport, RI, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2026 in Naples, FL.
Bernice- or Niecy- as she was called – was born in Newport to Alfred and Anne (Kramer) Gamins on May 13, 1933. She went to high school at Rogers and graduated in 1951. She met her future husband Saul while in high school and got married in Newport on March 20, 1955. Niecy and Saul were married for 67 years.
Niecy was a full-time loving Mom to her two sons and worked part time with Saul at his furniture store, Island Furniture for many years. She was actively involved in the Newport community as well as the Congregation Jeshuat Israel at Touro Synagogue. She served in numerous positions for the Congregation as well as the local Hadassah organization. Niecy also volunteered at the Women’s Resource Center in Newport for many years where she helped many women who had been impacted by abuse. The Women’s Resource Center bestowed the Volunteer of the Year Award to her in 2013. Niecy was very social and active and her life centered around her family and friends.
Niecy is survived by her son Larry and her daughter in-law Michelle of Naples, FL, her only granddaughter Lily of San Diego, CA and her sister Norma of Bethesda, MD. She is preceded in death by her husband Saul, son Allan and her parents Alfred and Anne.
The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to all the fine individuals at Avow Hospice in Naples, FL who cared and showed compassion for Niecy during her final days.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, January 22nd at 11:00 am at Beth Olam Cemetery, 181 Wyatt Road, Middletown. There will be a reception following the service at the Bay Ridge Community Club house off Forest Ave in Middletown immediately following the reception.
