The Town Council approved a request from state police to install a license plate reader camera on West Main Road during its first meeting of 2026 on Monday.
However, the council tabled a vote on a request to install six similar Flock cameras, asking the Middletown Police Department to develop a policy governing their use before the issue is reintroduced, according to a recap of the meeting from the town.
In other business, the council:
- Signed off on a traffic study for Prospect Avenue to examine speeding and commercial traffic in the area. Police Chief Jason Ryan said the study will be conducted in coming months, with a report back to the council.
- Awarded a $330,000 contract to Vision Government Solutions to perform a full property revaluation, which is required under state law. Tax Assessor George Durgin said his office will provide more details to property owners as the process ramps up.
- Learned a project to replace close to 1,200 streetlights with LED units has been largely completed, with only minor punch list items remaining.
- Approved resolutions asking the General Assembly to pursue legislation on library construction reimbursement rates, payment in lieu of taxes for Department of Defense properties, funding for the regional emergency shelter at Middletown Middle High School, special education funding and student transportation costs, and extending veterans’ property tax exemptions regardless of dates of service.
- Approved a special event permit for the Middletown Annual Egg Hunt on March 28 at 10 a.m. at the Wyatt Road soccer complex.
The council’s next regular meeting is Tuesday, Jan. 20, at 6:30 p.m. in Town Hall.
