Spring Bull Gallery will celebrate the 35th anniversary of its popular Fakes and Forgeries exhibition with an opening reception Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Bellevue Avenue gallery.

Art curator and writer Michael Rose will serve as this year’s judge, marking his third time selecting winners for the long-running show. Rose previously judged the exhibition in 2020 and 2021.

The exhibition, which runs Jan. 17 through March 1, invites artists to create their own interpretations of famous artworks for the chance to win juried awards. Rose will award $850 in prizes across five categories: Best in Show, Most Authentic, Most Original, Most Whimsical and Honorable Mention. He will announce his selections at 3 p.m. during Sunday’s reception.

“I am delighted to be returning as Awards Juror for Fakes and Forgeries at Spring Bull,” Rose said. “It is such a fun tradition and one that celebrates art history and the craft of making. I look forward to seeing local artists’ interpretations of well-known artworks.”

Rose serves as gallery manager at the historic Providence Art Club and is the founder and editor of New England Art News. He earned his undergraduate degree in art history at Providence College and holds a graduate certificate in appraisal studies in fine and decorative arts from New York University. He has lectured at numerous organizations, including the Rhode Island School of Design.

Founded in 1990 and located on Bellevue Avenue since 1994, Spring Bull Gallery is a cooperative gallery representing 19 member artists. The gallery also hosts work by visiting artists and themed juried exhibitions.

Spring Bull Gallery, at 55 Bellevue Ave., is open Wednesday through Monday from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
