Sail Newport will host Emmy award-winning storyteller and ocean explorer Richard Vevers for “An Ocean (RE)Introduction” on Thursday, Jan. 15, as part of its Challenger Lecture Series presented by Hinckley Yacht Services.
Vevers, who played the lead role in the Netflix documentary “Chasing Coral,” will share the surprising reality of the ocean and how it’s not what you imagine.
Vevers serves as director of Room 71 at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the world’s leading nonprofit dedicated to ocean science and exploration. In that role, he works with leading brands to flip beliefs about the ocean and accelerate ocean science solutions to global issues.
His work has been featured in more than 10,000 media articles and numerous books and documentaries, resulting in over $200 million in funding for ocean science and conservation initiatives, particularly in the protection of coral reefs through projects such as 50 Reefs.
Prior to his work in ocean science, Vevers spent a decade in top London advertising agencies before working as an artist, gallery owner, exhibition designer and underwater photographer.
A Fellow of The Explorer’s Club, Vevers has embarked on numerous remote expeditions to take Google Street View underwater and carry out the first comprehensive global survey of the world’s coral reefs.
The lecture runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Sail Newport, 72 Fort Adams Drive.
Tickets are $20 for non-members, $15 for Sail Newport members, and $10 for college students and military with ID. Admission is free for K-12 students.
