Brown University Health will require masking at all facilities in Rhode Island and Massachusetts starting Tuesday due to high community transmission of influenza and other respiratory viruses.
The red status designation applies to all Brown University Health hospitals and affiliates, including Newport Hospital, Rhode Island Hospital, The Miriam Hospital, Bradley Hospital, Gateway Healthcare, Saint Anne’s Hospital, Morton Hospital and Brown Health Medical Group locations.
Under the red status, Level 2 surgical masks are required for patients, visitors and staff at all times. Staff must wear a Level 2 surgical mask, or an N95 when clinically appropriate, covering the nose and mouth. Masks will be provided to patients’ family members and visitors upon arrival at hospitals and to patients for use in their rooms.
The health system cited rising community respiratory virus rates in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, a high number of emergency department patients diagnosed with respiratory viral infections, and increased hospital admissions related to respiratory illness, including hospital-acquired infections.
Brown University Health reminded the public that it is not too late to get a flu shot and encouraged frequent handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when sick to help reduce the spread of respiratory viruses.
The health system said it will continue to monitor conditions and adjust safety measures as needed.
