Salve Regina University’s Dance Program will present REDUX, an evening of innovative and reimagined choreography, Nov. 20-22 at the historic Casino Theatre.
Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20; 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21; and 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22.
REDUX, meaning “to revive” or “to bring back,” celebrates dance as an ever-evolving art form that draws inspiration from its roots while moving into the future, according to a news release.
The concert features original choreography by Salve adjunct faculty member Ashley Rich Omisore, guest artist Ingrid Díaz Céspedes of Decidedly Jazz Danceworks and student choreographers Chelsey Ghareeb, Anna Mangino and Reene Nemchek.
Omisore will present “The Messy Middle,” a reflection on growth through life’s uncertain seasons. Díaz Céspedes will premiere “Tríptico,” blending Rumba, Mambo, Cha-Cha-Chá, Salsa and other movement influences rooted in Latin and Afro-Caribbean traditions.
The program also revisits past works performed by a new generation of Salve dancers, including Salve adjunct faculty member Carlos Jones’ “Deeper” and student Julia Paulo’s “Dancing Sounds.” Student Cc Smith’s “There’s Still Time,” a reflection on gender identity and self-expression, will be presented shortly after its invited performance at the 7Midnights Physical Research Festival in New York City.
“I took inspiration from my lived experiences, as well as those within the trans, non-binary/gender nonconforming, and LGBTQ+ communities,” Smith said in the release. “I worked with movement that connects me to my authentic self as a queer non-binary woman, including influences from vogue and ballroom culture, which was created by Black queer and trans Americans.”
Tickets are $18 for general admission, $15 for children, military and seniors, $10 for Salve faculty and staff and free to Salve students with student ID. Tickets can be purchased at salve.edu/performances.
The Casino Theatre is located at 9 Freebody Street in Newport.
