The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority is offering free monthly transit passes to apartment residents through a new pilot program aimed at boosting ridership and reducing vehicle use.
The Residential Transit Pilot Program invites multifamily property owners and managers to order complimentary monthly passes for their tenants, providing free transportation in December 2025 and January 2026.
The initiative targets properties with at least 10 units located near bus routes.
“By partnering directly with multifamily property owners and managers, we’re helping residents experience the convenience and value of public transportation in communities that are already transit-accessible,” RIPTA Chief Executive Officer Christopher Durand said. “This initiative makes it easier for more people to choose transit over driving.”

The program is fully funded through the Executive Climate Change Coordinating Council’s fiscal 2025 spending plan and does not use RIPTA’s operating budget. The EC4 receives funding from Rhode Island’s proceeds from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.
“This initiative brings together housing and transportation in a way that supports both our climate goals and our residents’ daily lives,” said Terry Gray, EC4 chair and Department of Environmental Management director. “By making transit more accessible to those living in multifamily housing, we’re investing in a future that’s more affordable, sustainable and convenient for everyone.”
