Newport’s paid parking season comes to an end Friday, offering residents and visitors a break from meter fees starting this weekend as the city transitions into its winter parking schedule.
Beginning Saturday, Nov. 1, downtown metered parking will be free through April 30, 2026. However, motorists should note that a three-hour time limit remains in effect until 6 p.m. daily, even during the free parking period. The change comes just in time for the weekend as clocks fall back Sunday morning for the end of daylight saving time.
During the summer season, which runs from May 1 through Oct. 31, metered parking is enforced from 9 a.m. to midnight daily in the downtown area, with rates ranging from $1.50 to $2 per hour. Beach meters on Memorial Boulevard operate from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The city’s residential parking sticker program concluded Oct. 1. The program, which restricts parking on designated streets to residents with valid permits, runs annually from May 1 through Oct. 1.
The city operates several public parking lots year-round, including the Gateway Center at 23 America’s Cup Ave., which charges $2.50 per half-hour with a $40 daily maximum; the Mary Street lot between Mary and Church streets, which charges $3 per hour or $20 per day and offers Newport residents three hours free once per day with a resident sticker; the Long Wharf lot, which charges $2 per hour with a nine-hour limit; and the Touro Street lot, accessible from Clarke Street, which charges $2 per hour with a three-hour limit.
Easton’s Beach parking lot at 23 Memorial Blvd. operates from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. May through November, charging $15 per car on weekdays and $25 per car on weekends. Seasonal passes are available at City Hall.
