The 2025 Broadway Street Fair, which originated in 2016 following years of major construction up and down the main thoroughfare, was a massive success on its 10th calendar Anniversary. This free event is family-friendly and stretches from Equality Park down to Washington Square with six stages along the way serving up a broad array of musical entertainment. Acts ranging from solos to full bands of 6 players, bringing a high level of musicianship across the board. The music, coupled with the myriad of vendors ranging from food to crafts, retailers to artisans, and nonprofits, afforded visitors a rich experience. On this day, the song “On Broadway” could not be heard too often.

As has been the case since this writer first began contributing to What’s Up Newp 3 years ago at this event, the “heartbeat” is community. The beautiful weather again graced a very full day for locals to reconnect and simultaneously help support local businesses. The whole day presented a high-spirited feeling that was palpable, and folks engaged one another with care and a smile. The attendance this year seemed greater than in previous years and parking was more of a challenge as traffic was rerouted and old favorite spots were unavailable.

A wide variety of artwork was well represented, including photography, jewelry, quilting, and clothing. Vendors were very engaging and happy to talk about their unique work. Newport Fire and Harbormaster, Police, and a city council presence, among others, represented the City. Many community service organizations were also well represented, including Visiting Nurses (Celebrating 75 years on the island as a not-for-profit), Rogue Island Comedy, East Bay Community Action Program, Newport 2037, Newport Public Education Foundation, among others. There was also a wonderful parade and dance display by the women of Conexion Latina Newport, hosting Festival Latina in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.

This event requires months of planning and support from numerous sponsors to make it possible. Details are available in Michele Gallagher’s outstanding piece in What’s Up Newp on October 10th entitled “Spotlighting The Busy Women (and a few good men) Behind The Scenes at The Broadway Street Fair”.

The event could not have happened without the involvement of more than 50 volunteers, stage builders, and a superb sound crew.
