The Breakers: A Tribute to Tom Petty (via Spectacle Live)

Newport County’s fall music calendar features performances from Sept. 22 through Dec. 21 across historic venues throughout the region. From chamber music in mansions to folk rock in restored theaters, here are the standout shows:

JPT Film & Event Center

The JPT Film & Event Center presents a diverse fall lineup through Spectacle Live. The Breakers perform Sept. 27 at 8 p.m., followed by alternative rock band Vertical Horizon Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m. Acoustic guitar virtuoso Leo Kottke takes the stage Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m.

November features comedian Juston McKinney Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m., followed by folk rock legend Richard Thompson Nov. 15 at 8 p.m. Troubadours performs music of Carole King and James Taylor Nov. 16 at 7 p.m.

December shows include Irish traditional band Lunasa Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m. and Eileen Ivers: Joyful Christmas Dec. 13 at 7:30 p.m.

The venue is located at 49 Touro St. in Washington Square.

Redwood Library & Athenæum

The Redwood Library & Athenæum hosts pianist Jodie DeSalvo performing “American Salute” Sept. 30 at 6 p.m. The free concert features music by Joplin, Confrey, Berlin and Gershwin, concluding with “Rhapsody in Blue.” RSVP requested.

DeSalvo made her Carnegie Hall debut in 1988 and has performed with major orchestras including Chicago, San Francisco and Naples Philharmonic. The library is located at 50 Bellevue Ave.

Newport Live

Newport Live presents Steve Dyer Quartet performing “Freedom Melody” Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Channing Memorial Church. Singer-songwriter John Wesley Harding performs Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. at Greenvale Vineyards.

Puddingstone Music

Puddingstone Music presents intimate concerts in historic venues. Jazz and Shakespeare I features vocalist Aubrey Johnson and pianist Randy Ingram Sept. 28 at 3 p.m. at Provence Sur Mer, 39 Touro St., combining jazz performance with Shakespearean readings.

Jazz and Shakespeare II continues the series Oct. 4 at 6:30 p.m. at Rough Point, 680 Bellevue Ave., featuring trombonist Nick Finzer’s quartet. November brings violinist Geneva Lewis and pianist Audrey Vardanega performing Brahms, Schubert and Schumann Nov. 1 at 6:30 p.m. at Rough Point.

Tickets range from $55 to $80 and include cash bar and refreshments.

Newport Classical

Newport Classical presents its Chamber Series at Newport Classical Recital Hall, 42 Dearborn St. Violinist Blake Pouliot and pianist Henry Kramer perform Schumann and Dvořák Oct. 3. A free children’s concert features Aaron Larget-Caplan’s New Lullaby Project Oct. 12 at Emmanuel Church.

October continues with Trio Zimbalist performing Beethoven Oct. 17. November brings pianist Charlotte Hu performing Chopin Nov. 7, followed by saxophonist Valentin Kovalev presenting Pictures at an Exhibition Nov. 21.

In 2021, Ryan moved to Alexandria, Virginia, to support his wife Jen's career. He launched The Alexandria Brief in 2025, applying what he learned in Newport to a new community. With the help of some talented on-the-ground contributors, he still runs What's Up Newp — and always will.
