Five different players found the back of the net as Salve Regina University’s men’s soccer team dominated Massachusetts Maritime Academy 5-0 in non-league action at Toppa Field on Tuesday night. The victory improved the Seahawks to 2-2-3 overall while extending their winning streak against the Buccaneers to 10 games.
Sophomore Sawyer Beyer of New Milford, Conn., opened the scoring in the 24th minute with his second career goal, assisted by Kyle Crawford. The early strike set the tone for what would become a comprehensive victory. Joe Logue added a second goal just three minutes later in the 26th minute, giving Salve Regina a comfortable 2-0 halftime advantage despite being outshot 11-8 in the opening 45 minutes.
The Seahawks turned up the pressure in the second half, outshooting Mass Maritime 14-2 while adding three more goals. Ben Tomas scored his first goal of the season in the 52nd minute with an assist from Beyer, followed by Luke Woodward’s first career goal in the 69th minute off a pass from Ty Ferris. Lincoln Freeman capped the scoring just 50 seconds later with his second goal of the campaign.
Goalkeeper Brennan Silva earned the shutout with three saves over 86 minutes before Jonathan Santimore finished the final minutes. The victory continued Salve Regina’s dominance in the series that dates back to 1988, improving their all-time record against Mass Maritime to 13-3. Head coach Bill Lawler praised his team’s sustained effort throughout the match on social media following the comprehensive victory.
The Seahawks return to New England Men’s and Women’s Athletic Conference play Saturday when they travel to Boston to face Emerson College at 1 p.m. Mass Maritime, which entered the match 5-2-1 overall, will look to rebound from their first shutout loss of the season.
