The Portsmouth Patriots showcased a punishing ground game Thursday night, rolling past the Rogers Vikings 27-7 at Portsmouth High School.
Senior running back Camryn Dugan led the charge for Portsmouth, finding the end zone along with Adam Conheeny, Jackson Hackley and Michael Faria in a balanced offensive attack.
Rogers played tough throughout the first quarter before Portsmouth began to pull away. The Vikings’ fortunes took a turn when senior quarterback Derek Lloyd Jr. was injured on a play in the first half, forcing Rogers to turn to Rafael Reyes under center.
Reyes stepped up admirably in relief, playing exceptionally well throwing the ball downfield. The quarterback’s finest moment came in the second half when he connected with Juwan Taylor for a touchdown pass, providing Rogers with their lone score of the evening.
Despite Reyes’ solid performance and the Vikings’ competitive first-quarter effort, Portsmouth’s rushing attack proved too much to handle. The Patriots’ ability to spread the scoring among four different players demonstrated the depth of their ground game in the 27-7 victory.
