NEWPORT, R.I. — The Newport International Boat Show will feature expanded educational programming when it returns Sept. 11-14, show organizers announced Tuesday.
The 54th annual show, presented by BankNewport, will include new boater training opportunities across multiple venues in downtown Newport’s waterfront district.
The Cruiser’s Classroom, presented by the Annapolis School of Seamanship, returns with interactive presentations covering docking, navigation, safety, boat maintenance and offshore cruising. Classes will run all four days at the show’s Below-Deck location at the Hammetts entrance, with limited seating.
“We’re thrilled to bring our hands-on, real-world training to Newport,” said John Martino, CEO of Annapolis School of Seamanship. “This partnership allows us to empower boaters at every level with the skills and confidence they need to enjoy the water safely and fully.”
IYRS School of Technology & Trades will present Tech Talks featuring hands-on technical training led by industry experts. American Boat and Yacht Council expert Ed Sherman will conduct workshops on lithium batteries and electronically controlled diesel engines. Composites Hall-of-Famer Bob Lacovara will lead a three-hour workshop on gel coat technology and repair.
Tech Talk sessions cost $125 per person and include admission to the boat show. Advance online registration is recommended.
New for 2025 is BoatClass, powered by Freedom Boat Club, offering 90-minute on-water training sessions led by certified captains. Classes cover essential boating skills and will be held at Newport Harbor Hotel slips at 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. daily. Sessions cost $99 per person, with advance booking recommended due to limited spots.
“As we continue to welcome more boaters to the water, we need to ensure that they have the education and guidance to make them comfortable, confident and safe,” said Jocelyn Emory, director of strategy for the Newport International Boat Show.
The show spans 17 acres of Newport’s waterfront and features hundreds of exhibitors showcasing powerboats and sailboats ranging from 15 to 90 feet, plus marine equipment and accessories.
