The Community College of Rhode Island will offer English Language Studies classes at its Newport campus starting this fall, expanding access to language education for residents of Aquidneck Island.
The classes will be held on weekday evenings and Saturdays to accommodate adult learners who work or have family responsibilities, CCRI announced Thursday.
“We are proud to bring English Language Studies to our Newport Campus as part of our larger effort to expand programming and access on Aquidneck Island,” said Greg LaPointe, CCRI’s vice president for student affairs, chief outcomes officer and Newport campus leader.
The English Language Studies program helps adult learners improve their English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills for daily life, work and college preparation. Classes are designed for speakers of other languages and are open to all adults living in Rhode Island.
Students are grouped by ability level and receive instruction tailored to their needs. The classes are free.
CCRI’s Newport campus expansion reflects the college’s commitment to serving Rhode Islanders statewide, including those on Aquidneck Island, according to the announcement.
“Whether it’s adult education, credit-bearing programs, or workforce training, we are focused on ensuring the Newport Campus serves the evolving needs of this community,” LaPointe said.
CCRI enrolls nearly 18,000 students in credit-bearing degree and certificate programs and an additional 8,500 individuals in workforce development programs and adult education courses annually.
