What began as a routine shoplifting investigation at a Thames Street store has led to the arrest of two Massachusetts residents and the seizure of over $100,000 worth of stolen merchandise, Newport Police announced today.
The case started on May 26, 2025, when patrol officers responded to Team One Newport at 561 Thames Street for a reported shoplifting incident. Two suspects — a male and female in their 40s or early 50s driving a Suzuki motorcycle — were captured on video stealing items valued at $471.
Detectives Michael McCabe and Mark Lubin took over the investigation, using investigative tools including Flock Cameras to identify the suspects as Di J. DiPinto (also known as Dennis DiPinto) and Beverly DiPinto, both of 5 Blossom Lane, Berkley, Massachusetts.
The investigation revealed that Di J. DiPinto was wanted on outstanding warrants for shoplifting from the Cranston and Warwick Police Departments.
Working with the Berkley Police Department, Newport detectives obtained arrest warrants for both suspects and a search warrant for their residence. On Thursday, July 10, 2025, they executed the search warrant alongside members of the Plymouth County Sheriff’s BCI office and the Bristol County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit.
Both suspects were arrested during the operation, which resulted in the seizure of over $100,000 worth of stolen merchandise. Detectives are currently working to locate and return the stolen items to the respective stores from which they were taken.
The suspects were arraigned in Taunton District Court before being brought back to the Newport Police Department. Beverly DiPinto was released on $10,000 surety bail, while Di J. DiPinto was held for arraignment in Newport County Court today, Friday, July 11, 2025, before being turned over to the Cranston and Warwick Police Departments.
