Newport’s Charter Books will welcome bestselling author and screenwriter Casey Sherman for a free evening event on Wednesday, July 16th at 6 p.m.
Sherman, known for his 2009 book “The Finest Hours” which Disney adapted into a 2016 film starring Chris Pine and Casey Affleck, will present his latest work “Blood in the Water” at the independent bookstore located at 8 Broadway.

The author has written 17 books and is also known for “Boston Strong,” which became the 2016 film “Patriots Day” starring Mark Wahlberg and Kevin Bacon. His works have appeared on bestseller lists for the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and Boston Globe.
“Blood in the Water” tells the true crime story of Nathan Carman, a young man rescued from a lifeboat in the North Atlantic after his fishing boat sank, leaving his mother presumed drowned. The book explores questions surrounding Nathan’s account of events, particularly given that his mother had recently inherited a seven-million-dollar fortune following the mysterious murder of Nathan’s wealthy grandfather.
Sherman describes the book as examining “greed, suspicion, and revenge” while taking readers “from the high seas to the mansion of an enormously wealthy family.” The narrative is being positioned for readers interested in cases like the Murdaugh murders and stories involving money, power, and family dynamics.
The event runs from 6:00 to 7:00 PM and is free and open to all, though Charter Books requests attendees RSVP through their website at charterbookstore.com.
Charter Books, founded in 2020, offers programming with community partners to bring authors and guest speakers to Newport. The store is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Sunday from 12:00 to 5:00 PM.
