Trinity Brewhouse, Rhode Island’s original brewpub, will change hands this summer as the team behind The Patio on Broadway, along with their family partners, prepares to acquire the iconic downtown establishment.

The acquisition marks a significant milestone for Trinity Brewhouse founder and owner Josh Miller, who is celebrating five decades in Providence’s hospitality industry. Miller first obtained a liquor license in downtown Providence at age 21 with the purchase of the Met Café, making him the youngest person to receive such a license in the city at that time.

“This year marks 50 years since I first obtained a liquor license in downtown Providence,” Miller said. “I am extremely proud to have continued my journey in the restaurant and hospitality industry and for Trinity to have played a role in Rhode Island’s food, drink, and cultural scene over the past thirty years.”

Trinity Brewhouse opened in 1994, becoming one of the first two brewpubs in Rhode Island following the state’s legalization of such establishments. The brewpub’s name carries special significance — it was chosen in collaboration with Trinity Repertory Theatre, honoring Miller’s family connection to the venue where both his parents worked in the 1960s.

Angel Winpenny, owner of The Patio on Broadway, expressed enthusiasm about taking stewardship of the beloved establishment. All members of the acquiring team are Rhode Island natives and longtime Trinity fans.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Trinity Brewhouse into our growing family,” Winpenny said. “It’s a privilege to be part of such a well-loved Rhode Island establishment, and our team looks forward to honoring its history and preserving the welcoming spirit and neighborhood vibe of the Brewhouse.”

The new ownership plans to maintain Trinity’s established identity while making strategic improvements. They are committed to keeping the Trinity name and continuing to serve the high-quality craft beer that has defined the brewpub for three decades.

Trinity Brewhouse will continue operating through July, hosting special events and fundraisers supporting local nonprofits. The establishment will then close in August for scheduled renovations, with plans to reopen in time to welcome Brown University Health to the neighborhood and prepare for the fall season in downtown Providence.

The transition aims to preserve continuity for both staff and patrons. Trinity’s current team will remain actively involved throughout the ownership change, and the new owners plan to retain many longtime staff members, several of whom have been part of the Trinity family for decades.

Miller expressed satisfaction in passing the torch to fellow Rhode Islanders who share his commitment to the brewpub’s legacy.

“I am grateful to see the Trinity Brewhouse legacy live on in the hands of fellow Rhode Islanders who plan to preserve both the name and the spirit of the brewpub,” he said.

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
