Tax issues can sometimes become overwhelming for businesses and individuals, which is why the state Division of Taxation is holding tax compliance days for businesses in Newport and Narragansett over the next few days.
Neena Savage, Rhode Island’s tax administrator, said these are individual sessions meant to help taxpayers become compliant.
The tax compliance events, Savage said, are “for people (businesses) that are struggling to comply and who have complex issues.”
The Newport event is on May 22 at Innovate Newport, second floor Conference Hall, 513 Broadway, from noon to 5 p.m. The Narragansett event is May 29 at the University of Rhode Island Bay Campus, Coastal Institute Building, 215 South Ferry Road, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Tax Compliance Day events have previously been in Providence and Cranston.
We spoke with Savage not only about the tax compliance days, but also about state revenues, and the millions and millions of dollars owed by taxpayers, and the efforts the division is making to recover the delinquent taxes.
According to the division’s website there are 110 delinquent taxpayers owing more than $100,000 each, totaling $37,186,236. The website lists delinquent taxpayers, owning more than $50,000. That list is on the division’s website: https://tax.ri.gov/.
At the top of the list is Richard Shanley of Warwick, who owes, according to the division, $3,361,015.
