newportFILM Screens SXSW Audience Award Winning Documentary in Partnership with the Rhode Island School for the Deaf in Providence (via newportFILM)

newportFILM is hosting a special screening of “DEAF PRESIDENT NOW!” in collaboration with the Rhode Island School for the Deaf and Apple TV+. The event will be held on May 15 at Avon Cinema in Providence.

This documentary captures the powerful 1988 protests at Gallaudet University that resulted in the appointment of the school’s first Deaf president.

Nyle DiMarco and Davis Guggenheim direct the film, which features interviews with key figures from the movement. The documentary uses an innovative storytelling approach called Deaf Point of View.

Before the screening, there’s a panel discussion organized by the Rhode Island School for the Deaf. Panelists include Bruce Bucci, associate professor at Framingham State University, Jeannie Desmarais-Valdez from the Rhode Island School for the Deaf, and Patrick Costello, who founded PC’s ASL Time Travel.

The event kicks off at 5:45 p.m., with the panel at 6:30 p.m. and the film at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased through newportFILM.
