A Massachusetts man is facing gun charges after police found him drunk and carrying a hidden weapon without proper permits at a historic Rhode Island property.
Nelson Rivera, 36, from Chelsea, Mass., was arrested on May 4 at the Glen Manor House in Portsmouth. Police spotted Rivera and three others fishing on the property’s dock in the early hours of the morning, around 3 a.m.
The Portsmouth Police Department says an officer doing a regular check of the city-owned property spotted a suspicious car in the parking lot. The empty vehicle had open alcohol containers, shotgun shells, and handgun ammo inside.
When questioned, Rivera admitted he had a hidden gun in his waistband. Police found a 9mm handgun and a loaded 10-round magazine tucked into his pants.
Police say Rivera was clearly drunk. He doesn’t have a license to carry a concealed weapon.
Rivera is charged with carrying a gun while intoxicated and carrying a gun without a license or permit. A justice of the peace set his bail at $5,000 with surety during his arraignment.
As part of his release conditions, Rivera is banned from the Glen Manor House. He’s due back in court on May 8 at the 2nd Division District Court in Newport for another arraignment.
Police sent the other people at the scene away without any further issues.
