Newport’s retail landscape has a new—but familiar—face. Local entrepreneur and longtime Thames Street fixture Jay Lasky has launched Big Weather Gear, a fresh retail concept rooted in his decades-long passion for outdoor and marine apparel.
This new venture brings together top performance brands and lifestyle wear under one roof, offering something for everyone who lives, works, or plays by the water, in the mountains, or heading off on their next adventure.
Lasky’s story began in 1985 when he first started selling multi-branded outdoor apparel after working in his father’s store on the very same street. After adding Helly Hansen to his line in 1994, he then opened the first Helly Hansen Store in North America in 1998 helping to introduce and establish the now-iconic brand in Newport’s bustling waterfront community. That Helly Hansen store, which was the most successful Helly Hansen store globally, existed at 154 Thames Street for nearly 30 years.
Today, Big Weather Gear stands as Jay’s independent vision and is the next wave of that journey.
Big Weather Gear carries a handpicked selection of marine and active lifestyle brands including Musto, Helly Hansen Workwear, The North Face, Huk, Prana, Grundéns, Stio, Mountain Hardware, Outdoor Research, and Free Fly, as well as women’s resort wear brands Cabana Life, Smith & Quinn, and Debbie Katz. The store truly offers something for everyone, and the shopping selection is a treat for active lifestyle enthusiasts and those ready for the next trip and adventure.
With more than 40 years riding the retail waves, Jay sees this store as both a homecoming and a new beginning. “Retail’s not for the faint of heart, but I love it. You learn to ride the tides—high and low—and keep your compass pointed forward.”
To mark the launch, Big Weather Gear hosted a VIP Grand Opening Party last week, celebrating with close friends, family, and long-time customers who have supported Jay through every chapter. In addition to welcoming new and past customers, the store will offer various promotional offerings throughout the spring season—a perfect opportunity to gear up for summer and experience the next wave in Newport’s retail legacy. Additionally, Big Weather Gear is excited to be exhibiting at the Entrance to the Newport International Boat show in September.
