Checkpoint Zoo STILL

Celebrating its 15th Anniversary, newportFILM has curated Sundance Official Selections and a Leonardo DiCaprio Executive Produced documentary about a small, heroic team saving animals in a Ukrainian zoo for its spring film lineup.

Launching the spring season is the 2024 Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning A New Kind of Wilderness, which follows a family who must unexpectedly transition from an idyllic homesteading life to modernity.

From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Kevin Macdonald, One to One: John & Yoko is a revelatory inside-look at John Lennon & Yoko Ono’s life in Greenwich Village in the early 1970s, featuring music from John & Yoko’s only full-length concerts, newly remixed and produced by Sean Ono Lennon. newportFILM partners with the Greenwich Odeum to present what Variety calls, “The rare rock doc that’s a must-see.”

Tribeca Festival Audience Award-winning Checkpoint Zoo documents a daring rescue led by a heroic team of zookeepers and volunteers, who risked their lives to save thousands of animals trapped in a zoo behind enemy lines during the Russian Invasion of Ukraine. Executive Produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Joshua Zeman, Checkpoint Zoo, according to The Daily Beast, is “a work of heart-stopping suspense and tenderness… one of the year’s most important films.”

Rounding out the spring series is the incredibly timely 2025 Sundance World Cinema Documentary Award-winning documentary Mr. Nobody Against Putin. As Russia launches its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, primary schools across Russia are transformed into recruitment stages for the war. Facing the ethical dilemma of working in a system defined by propaganda and violence, a brave teacher films what’s really happening in his own school. The Guardian says Mr. Nobody Against Putin is “a must-watch, indelible document of ideological warfare that echoes far beyond Russia.”

Presenting Rhode Island premieres of new, critically acclaimed documentaries and newportFILM screens in partnership with venues and organizations throughout the state all year round. For more details and to purchase tickets, please visit newportfilm.com.
