The Dance program at Salve Regina University will present “Between the Beats,” a dance performance celebrating the dynamic relationship between sound and movement at the Casino Theatre in Newport February 6 – 8, 2025.

The performance explores how rhythm can drive the body, how the body can create rhythm, and how sometimes, the most profound moments are those when we find ourselves in the in-between.

Faculty, guest artist and student pieces range from dynamic, percussive explorations to introspective expressions, each uncovering a unique perspective on how we experience music and time.

NYC-based tap dance artist/choreographer, educator and cultural historian Lisa La Touche will premiere Flying Home 2 the UnKnown, a reflection on the search of origins, destiny, and purpose while on the shoulders of “ferocious ancestors.” Set to music by Ella Fitzgerald and Little Dragon with original spoken word by Salve Regina senior Jala Settles, the work connects the past of tap dance to the present.

Jazz dance artist, educator, scholar and chair of dance at SUNY Brockport Carlos Jones will present a new commission titled Deeper. Jones is a frequent choreographer for Salve Dance and his works always wow audiences with rhythmic play that makes the music visible.

Boston-based Kat Pantos, artistic director and founder of Pantos Project, is sharing She Said She Said – an athletic and dynamic contemporary work that she set on Salve students in 2015. The work premiered in 2013 for the Women in Dance Festival at the Ailey Citigroup Theatre. Since the premier, She Said She Said has been shown at Jacob’s Pillow, Suzanne Roberts Theatre in Philadelphia, and has closed the program for each Pantos Project season in Boston.

Salve faculty member and alum Haley Andrews ’19 restaged 1,968.7 Miles of Vulnerability, a piece that she first choreographed in 2017 as a Salve student and then went on to present in festivals across the country. Andrews is a queer dance artist and choreographer who works to instill social and equitable change in the world through her art.

Additional works will be presented by Salve students Livia Armstrong, Ashley Blake, Jala Settles and Taylor Steeves.  Students Millie Chalk, Julia Chiola, Anna Mangino and Claire Powell will present work in alternating performances.

Performances are at the historic Casino Theatre, 9 Freebody Street, Newport, RI. Tickets are $17.00 for general admission, $14.00 for children, military and seniors, $10.00 for Salve faculty and staff and free to Salve students with student ID.
