Rep. Alex Finkelman (D-Dist. 74, Jamestown, Middletown) asked the Rhode Island House of Representatives to adjourn their session in memory of Jamestown resident Margaret Janikies on Wednesday, February 12.
The House’s official X account shared, “Margaret was known for her entrepreneurial spirit, generosity, and warm smile. With her late husband, Nicholas, she created a successful business and left a lasting mark on the community.”
Margaret “Marge” Janikies, co-founder of The Jan Companies and a key player in New England’s restaurant scene, passed away peacefully on Feb. 10 at the age of 86.
Together with her late husband, Nicholas William Janikies, Marge built one of New England’s largest privately owned restaurant empires. The Jan Companies currently runs over 84 Burger King franchises across 11 states, with more than 60 locations in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Vermont.
Their business reach goes beyond fast food, including Newport Creamery, Krispy Kreme, Country Inn, and several country clubs. In December 2001, The Jan Companies bought Newport Creamery, which now has 10 spots in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
Yesterday, Representative @FinkelmanAlex requested the session be adjourned in memory of Margaret Janikies of Jamestown, the beloved founder of the Jam Companies.
