The Middletown Town Council has promoted Cliff McGregor to deputy chief of the Middletown Police Department. The decision was made during Tuesday night’s council meeting.

McGregor, previously a lieutenant, is now second in command, taking over from Jason Ryan, who became chief late last year.

Council members praised McGregor for his dedication to the department and community, expressing their support for him in his new role.

In other news, the council appointed Stephen Huttler to the Planning Board after a thorough interview process.

The council also passed changes to the town’s zoning rules, making it simpler to build accessory dwelling units.

Mindy’s Galley at 72 East Main Road got the go-ahead to open, serving Asian cuisine and sushi.

Two special events received approval. The Newport County YMCA’s 2nd Annual Charlie Holder Sr. Memorial 5K Road Race Walk/Run is set for May 17.

Newport Mayor Charlie Holder expressed gratitude to the council, noting, “Last year’s race raised over $17,000, and we’re hoping to top that this year.”

The Amica Newport Marathon also got the green light for its October 12 event.
