Scouting America’s Narragansett Council recently honored 11 volunteers for their outstanding community service and dedication to local youth. Among the recipients were two Newport County residents, Kurt Gent from Tiverton and Charlie Normand from Jamestown, who received the Silver Beaver Award – the highest recognition a local council can give to a volunteer.
The awards were presented at the annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner on January 29.
Gent, who serves on the committee for Troop 24 Boys and Troop 24 Girls in New Bedford’s Southeast District, is actively involved in the Safety Commission and helps with Camp Norse’s Klondike Derby. He’s also the Youth Protection Training representative for the Southeast District, conducting many in-person training sessions.

Normand has been on the Narragansett Council’s Executive Board since 2015 and plays a key role in organizing the yearly Sporting Clays event. He’s working on drumming up excitement for the upcoming 8th Annual Sporting Clays event, aiming to get even more Scouts to participate this fall.

Tim McCandless, Narragansett Council Executive & CEO, expressed his appreciation for the award recipients. “I’m really proud of and grateful for all our exceptional volunteers who’ve been recognized this year,” he said. “Their outstanding service and leadership have made a big difference in Scouting and in the lives of young people in our communities.”
The Narragansett Council serves over 5,000 youth each year across Rhode Island, Southeastern Massachusetts, and Pawcatuck, Connecticut.
