President Donald Trump has taken office for a second non-consecutive term, sworn in on Monday, January 20, 2025. Rhode Island’s congressional representatives have shared their thoughts on the event.

Rep. Seth Magaziner, representing Rhode Island’s 2nd District, says he’ll work with the administration when it benefits his constituents. He promises to “stand up to extremism, and to defend our democracy, rights, and freedoms.” Magaziner adds, “Together, we will ensure that the United States remains strong, fair and just for all.”

Congressman Gabe Amo from the 1st District states he’s ready to “work with anyone, from any party, who wants to improve the lives of Rhode Islanders.” He emphasizes his commitment to “stand firm and fight to defend Rhode Island values to continue our nation’s progress, expand opportunity to the many, and bring our communities together.”

“A bedrock principle of democracy is the peaceful transition of power. Today, we uphold this sacred tradition with President Trump taking office. I have always said that I will work with anyone, from any party, who wants to improve the lives of Rhode Islanders. But I will also stand firm and fight to defend Rhode Island values to continue our nation’s progress, expand opportunity to the many, and bring our communities together.”

Sen. Jack Reed congratulates Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance on their inauguration. He expresses hope that Trump will approach his second term “with a stronger commitment to upholding and defending our Constitution.”

“Congratulations to President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance on their inauguration.

“The peaceful transfer of power is one of the hallmarks of our democracy.  I hope President Trump will approach his second time in office with a stronger commitment to upholding and defending our Constitution.

“America remains a nation of strength, resilience, prosperity, and opportunity.  I will continue working to keep it that way while also making new progress, delivering for our state, and serving as a voice for all Rhode Islanders, no matter their political affiliation.”

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse describes the event as “no normal inauguration.” He warns that “Democrats must be vigilant to protect Americans’ civil liberties, our democratic system, and the rule of law.” Whitehouse also mentions concerns about a cryptocurrency allegedly created by Trump, though this claim hasn’t been independently verified.

“This was no normal inauguration of an American president.

President Trump gave a cadre of billionaires seats of honor on the dais, and he is handing them the power of the federal government to loot the hardworking people who pay their taxes and keep this country running. The incoming president just created a cryptocurrency to enrich himself as he takes office. His first actions as president include massive giveaways to Big Oil billionaires and pledging to raise taxes on Americans. And the outgoing president had reason to preemptively try to protect his family from politically weaponized investigations.

Democrats must be vigilant to protect Americans’ civil liberties, our democratic system, and the rule of law, as looters and polluters line up before President Trump to feed themselves at the expense of the middle class and our environment.”
