A new Mexican restaurant is set to spice up Newport’s dining scene, taking over the space occupied by Hummingbird.

Monarca Authentic Mexican Cuisine has filed a victualing license application with the City of Newport, signaling its intent to open at 104 Broadway.

The application, submitted by owner Maria Carranza on Nov. 20, outlines plans for a 30-seat restaurant with proposed hours of operation from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Carranza estimates an $80,000 investment in the new venture.

Monarca LLC, the company behind the restaurant, lists its owner’s address to Mapple Avenue in Middletown, suggesting local ties to the area.

The transition comes on the heels of Hummingbird’s recent closure announcement. The Caribbean restaurant’s owners, Dezna and Abe, shared on Instagram their plans to relocate to North Carolina after eight years of serving the Newport community.

“We’re so thankful for your support, friendship, and loyalty to Hummingbird,” the departing owners wrote in their social media post. “As we start this new chapter in North Carolina, we’re taking your kindness and encouragement with us.”

Monarca’s arrival continues the trend of Mexican cuisine’s popularity in Newport. The new eatery will join a cluster of established Mexican restaurants in the area, including Diego’s, Perro Salado, Tijuana Burrito Grill, and La Vecina Taqueria, all within walking distance.

Carranza’s application indicates no plans for a liquor license at this time, potentially continuing the BYOB policy that was popular at Hummingbird.

The City Council will review the application for approval during their Regular City Council Meeting on Wednesday, December 11. If granted, the license will be valid from Dec. 1, 2024, to Nov. 30, 2025.
