Providence, RI – Four hospitals within the Brown University Health system have earned “A” Hospital Safety Grades from The Leapfrog Group, a national watchdog organization recognizing excellence in patient safety.
The hospitals receiving this distinction are The Miriam Hospital and Newport Hospital in Rhode Island, and Morton Hospital and Saint Anne’s Hospital in Massachusetts.
According to Brown University Health, this achievement highlights their commitment to providing high-quality, safe care to patients. Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, RI received a “B” for Fall 2024.
The Leapfrog Group bases its “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” grades on a rigorous evaluation of over 30 national performance measures. These measures reflect errors, accidents, injuries, infections, and the systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm.
Saint Anne’s Hospital received a particularly notable achievement, earning its 26th consecutive “A” grade since the Leapfrog Group’s grading system began in 2012. This distinction places it among only 12 hospitals nationwide to have achieved this honor.
“This recognition highlights the dedication of our entire team at Brown University Health,” said Sarah Frost, chief of hospital operations and president of Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s. “We are steadfast in protecting those we serve, preventing harm, and reducing errors–ensuring that every patient receives the safest, most compassionate care possible.”
Carole Billington, interim hospital president and chief nursing officer at Saint Anne’s Hospital, echoed this sentiment, stating, “As a community hospital, Saint Anne’s Hospital has had a longstanding commitment to providing safe, high-quality care to our community’s patients. Even with new and unique challenges every year, our staff and providers are dedicated to upholding high standards of care that work to minimize harm to patients. We’re enormously proud of our entire team’s dedication to a culture of safety that has resulted in Leapfrog’s Straight A grade for the past 12 years.”
The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization, aims to hold hospitals accountable for their performance in preventing medical errors and harm to patients. Their grading system is peer-reviewed, transparent, and free to the public, updated twice annually in the fall and spring. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the sole hospital ratings program solely based on prevention of medical errors and patient harm.
Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, congratulated the hospitals, stating, “Achieving an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade is a significant accomplishment for Brown University Health. It reflects enormous dedication to your patients and their families, and your whole community should be proud.”
