With generous support from ZEISS Nature Observation, the Norman Bird Sanctuary is offering a special week of programming with US Ambassador for ZEISS, Catherine Hamilton.
Hamilton is known for her illustrations and writing in nature publications such as Nature and Orion Magazine, her international nature and birding tours, and her keen ability to educate at the intersection of natural history and art.
A longtime supporter and fan of the Norman Bird Sanctuary and its Free Sunday Morning Bird Walk program, Hamilton will lead three unique public programs highlighting the Sanctuary’s natural resources:
· Sunday Morning Bird Walk on December 1 at 8:00 a.m.,
· Night Hike with ZEISS Thermal Imaging Technology on December 3 at 6:30 p.m., and
· Nature Illustration & Journaling Workshop on December 7 at 10:00 a.m.

Meet the Guest Guide: Catherine Hamilton

Catherine Hamilton holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design and a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Bennington College. She taught painting and drawing at RISD from 1997-2003 and has taught at other institutions and programs (Bennington College, Mass College of Art, Mass Audubon) throughout the 25 years she has been a professional artist.
For the last several years, Catherine has been traveling and birding full time, leading wildlife tours, and serving as a US Ambassador for ZEISS Nature Observation. Working out of wildlife refuges, urban environments, research stations, and museum collections, Catherine has been following birds primarily through North, Central, and South America, making drawings and paintings. Her fine art can be found in private, corporate, and small museum collections in the US and abroad. Her bird illustrations can be found in publications like the recent Princeton University Press book “The Warbler Guide,” and in journals and magazines such as “Nature,” “Bird Observer,” and “Orion Magazine.” Catherine was also featured in the 2012 HBO documentary “Birders: The Central Park Effect.”

Night Hike with ZEISS Thermal Imaging Technology
Join the Norman Bird Sanctuary and Catherine Hamilton on Tuesday, December 3 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. for a special evening adventure on the trails. Utilizing ZEISS thermal imaging technology, attendees will experience the Sanctuary’s trails and nocturnal wildlife like never before. Get tickets.
Nature Illustration & Journaling Workshop
Join Catherine Hamilton on Saturday, December 7 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. for a special illustration and journaling workshop nestled in the Norman Bird Sanctuary’s idyllic winter landscape.
Participants will begin the day in the Studio Classroom with a discussion and guided tutorial of nature illustration and journaling techniques, followed by unstructured time to wander the trails, fields, and gardens and practice in journals and sketchbooks. The workshop will close with a final group reflection. Tea and hot chocolate provided. Participants must provide their own sketchbooks/journal. Get tickets.
