How does art inspire poetry? How can words help us see? These are the questions award-winning poet and writer Michael Klein will delve into during a one-day workshop at the Jamestown Arts Center on Saturday, November 23, from 10 am to 1 pm. No prior writing experience is needed—this workshop is designed for anyone who wants to explore the intersection of visual art and poetry.
Ekphrastic poetry—poetry inspired by works of art—provides a powerful way to capture the relationship between what we see and feel. Using the works of art in the JAC’s Members’ Show as a springboard, workshop participants will write poems that reflect their responses to the visual art on display.
“Whether you’re an experienced poet or someone trying out writing for the first time, this workshop offers an immersive and inspiring experience,” says Alex Tsocanos, Interim Education Director at JAC. “It’s a chance to see art from a different perspective, and to use language as a lens for exploring those visual stories.”
Christine Cocca, JAC’s Executive Director, adds: “We’re thrilled to welcome Michael back to lead this special workshop. His experience as both a poet and educator is extensive and he’ll be able to guide participants through the creative process, helping them translate their reflections on the Members’ Show into poetry. It’s exciting to think about the possibilities—how first-time writers and artists alike will engage with one another’s work in new and unexpected ways.”
Michael Klein’s poetry and teacher career has earned him significant acclaim. His works include 1990, Track Conditions, The End of Being Known, and his latest book, When I Was a Twin, blends poetry and prose together. He is a two-time recipient of the Lambda Literary Award. Earlier this year, he was one of four featured poets at the JAC Outloud poetry reading series.
