Local food and seafood producers in Rhode Island can now apply for grant funding to support the growth and development of the local food system. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) announced that nearly $500,000 is available through the Local Agriculture and Seafood Act (LASA) grant program. Applications are open from October 1 to November 30, 2024.

The LASA program, enacted in 2012, provides grants of up to $20,000 to eligible Rhode Island-based farmers, fishers, producer groups, and non-profit organizations. This year, the program prioritizes supporting beginning and underinvested producers, developing new marketing and distribution channels, and promoting climate-smart agriculture practices.

“LASA is a pillar of our food strategy through which Rhode Island prioritizes investments in local food to provide better access to safe, healthy, and affordable food for all of our residents,” said Governor Dan McKee in a statement.

The program has awarded nearly $3 million in grants over the past 12 years. In the last funding cycle, DEM awarded over $650,000 to 43 Rhode Island food businesses.

Senator V. Susan Sosnowski, who authored the LASA law, highlighted the program’s impact, stating, “These grants enhance food security, boost small businesses, and make Rhode Island more sustainable and resilient.”

DEM Director Terry Gray emphasized the importance of the program in supporting a healthy and sustainable food system while promoting food security.

A technical assistance webinar for prospective applicants will be hosted by the Rhode Island Food Policy Council on Monday, October 21 at 4 PM. Registration is available online.

Applications must be submitted online through the State of Rhode Island Grant’s Management System by November 30, 2024, at 11:59 PM. For more information on the LASA Grant program, including eligibility requirements and grant guidelines, please visit DEM’s website or contact DEM’s Division of Agriculture and Forest Environment at 401-222-2781 or DEM.LASA@dem.ri.gov.
