Newport City Council is gearing up to interview candidates for open positions on the Canvassing Authority and Historic District Commission. The interviews are set for Oct. 1 in the Ground Floor Conference Room at City Hall, 43 Broadway, starting at 5 p.m.
Three hopefuls are in the running for an alternate spot on the Historic District Commission. Kenny Benell, Brooke Richter, and Ben Willet will be interviewed at 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 6:30 p.m. respectively.
Mary Ann Marin is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. interview for an alternate position on the Canvassing Authority.
The Historic District Commission is made up of volunteers appointed by the City Council, with guidance from the City’s Historic Preservation Planner.
The Canvassing Authority plays a key role in the electoral process, handling everything from voter registration to vote counting on election day.
After the interviews wrap up, the Council may discuss their voting intentions for these appointments at an upcoming regular Council meeting.
