Rhode Island announced its votes for the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee during Tuesday night’s roll call of states at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
Joe Shekarchi, speaker of the Rhode Island House, delivered the state’s vote count.
“We have the smallest state, but we have the biggest ideas,” Shekarchi said. “Home to the nation’s first wind farm and historic act on climate, we continue leading the way on sustainability and housing.”
Among those representing Rhode Island and standing with Shekarchi at the convention were Commerce Secretary/former Governor Gina Raimondo, Senator Jack Reed, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Congressman Gabe Amo, Governor Dan McKee, Senator Jack Reed, Secretary of State Greg Amore, General Treasurer James Diossa, and Providence Mayor Brett Smiley.
The Ocean State cast one vote present and 34 ballots for Vice President Kamala Harris to be the Democratic nominee for president.
Shekarchi referred to Rhode Island as the “deep blue Ocean State” and emphasized its leadership on environmental issues.
The convention continues through Thursday when Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to address the convention.
