Monday evening June 10, was a perfect night for a ball game at Cardines Field in Newport, where the Newport Gulls faced the visiting Mystic Schooners. The two seaside clubs fought hard in a close game, with the Gulls pulling out a 7-6 victory on a walk-off hit in the bottom of the ninth. But what mattered as much as the final score was the experience for those in attendance, from players competing for a chance at the pros, to fans enjoying the game, as millions have done before them.
The historic field is home to the Gulls, who play in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, where teams are comprised of college players from across the country. It’s a place where the dream of making the big leagues begins, and although the odds are long for these summer athletes, the level of competition and esprit du corps they demonstrate is inspiring.
Summer leagues like these continue to provide a great night of family fun. Monday’s game honored the town of Middletown and opening ceremonies included an honor guard, town officials throwing out the first pitch, local scouts, and little leaguers accompanying players onto the field. The near sellout crowd experienced a slice of Americana, complete with a donut-eating contest, a run around the bases, and all the other traditions that make minor league baseball an enduring American pastime.
The Gulls season is just beginning with games scheduled through July, and playoffs in early August. Click here for tickets. Meanwhile, we’re sharing a few photos from Monday’s game.
