William Tsonos, president and CEO of BankRI, has been nominated by Gov. Dan McKee to serve on the Rhode Island Commerce Corporation Board.

The governor’s office said Tsonos, who has more than three decades of experience in the banking industry, was instrumental in pushing for the establishment of Paycheck Protection Program during the COVID-19 pandemic. He was previously director of commercial banking at BankRI and oversaw commercial loans, deposits, cash management and other areas.

“William is a proven and seasoned leader in the banking field who brings a depth of knowledge in business development and management,” McKee said in a statement. “I look forward to working with him and the other members of the board to grow Rhode Island’s economy and open pathways to good-paying jobs throughout our state.”

Tsonos said he was honored by the nomination and looks forward to working on behalf of the state.

“I take this public service commitment seriously and am happy to use my many years of banking experience for the betterment of the State,” he said in a statement.

His nomination will be submitted to the Rhode Island Senate for consideration.
