On Saturday, April 20, the Norman Bird Sanctuary welcomed over 40 artists for its inaugural Paint Paradise: Plein Air Day followed by a successful evening benefit show. The Plein Air Day event honored the artistic legacy of Aquidneck Island’s Paradise Valley and Norman Bird Sanctuary founder, Mabel Norman Cerio, who was an artist and naturalist.

Artists of all experience levels explored the 300 acres of protected open space that make up the Norman Bird Sanctuary, which is famous for its scenic vistas and vibrant landscapes. Using a number of different mediums, artists drew from the surrounding landscape to capture scenes of forests, fields, wildlife, and, of course, Hanging Rock.

“It was terrific to see artists carrying on the tradition of artmaking in Paradise,” shared Norman Bird Sanctuary Executive Director, Kaity Ryan. “The benefit show was a perfect end to the day: it was a fun celebration of community, creativity, and legacy.”

After a day of painting in the open air, artists and supporters gathered in Norman Bird Sanctuary’s historic barn for a culminating juried art show and sale, generously sponsored by John Grosvenor and Cheryl Hackett. Invited to display and sell work created that day, artists submitted over 30 unique pieces that were voted on by the event attendees. The winning pieces included Amy Bartlett-Wright’s View from the Farmhouse and Nancy Custin’s Hanging Rock Study (left and right respectively).

“We are thrilled that our first Plein Air Day was such a success,” shared Norman Bird Sanctuary Board of Directors Chair, Liz Drayton. “We loved welcoming artists and we look forward to continuing this tradition in years to come. Artists are welcome to find inspiration in this beautiful natural landscape any day of the year!”
