Carol (McGowan) Dow, 63, of Newport, Rhode Island, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, January 20, 2019 in the comfort of her home.
Carol was born in Brighton, Massachusetts to the late Francis and Loretto McGowan on December 24, 1956. She graduated from Brighton High School in 1975 and went on to attend Boston State College. She retired from a 25-year career at Verizon as an Equipment Instillation Manager. After raising her family in Leominster, Massachusetts, she fall in love with Newport and quickly became a member of the community. She was often seen at her favorite local spot, O’Brien’s Pub. An avid dog lover, she was frequently seen walking dogs throughout the 5th ward. She was an active Hibernian and enjoyed celebrating her Irish heritage especially on parade day. She lived for the beach and her favorite summer spot was music at King’s Park. She was a true Bostonian at heart and never missed a Red Sox or Patriots game, after all Brady was her man.
Carol is survived by her son, Daniel Dow and daughter-in-law, Brenda Cummings of Fitchburg, MA, her daughter, Devon Dow of Middletown, RI, her sisters, Janet Hawkins of Newport, RI, Marianne Spencer of Leominster, MA, sister-in-law Janet McGowan of Mansfield, MA, along with many nieces and nephews which she held so close to her heart. She is predeceased by Philip Dow, her parents, Francis and Loretto McGowan and her brother, Garrett McGowan.
Visiting hours will be held from 4-7 pm on Thursday, January 31, 2019 at the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport, RI.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Friday, February 1, 2019 at St. Augustin’s Church, Carroll Ave. & Eastnor Rd, Newport at 10 am. Burial will be private.
