FabNewport will present its Second Annual Maker Party at the Casino Theater on August 27 from 5-8pm. A student showcase is followed by Boston College professor, evolutionary psychologist Peter Gray, discussing his research on children thriving as learners.

In addition there will be food and fun for the whole family. The event is fundraiser. Tickets can be purchased at Eventbrite or the day of the event.

Gray professor passionately articulates a vision for liberating children from the shackles of traditional learning via his Psychology Today blog and his book, Free to Learn, Why Unleashing the Instinct to Play Will Make our Children Happier, More Self-Reliant and Better Students for Life. The students showcase gives community members a chance to discuss coding, designing, fabricating and manufacturing with middle and high school students whose projects will be on
display.

In Free to Learn, developmental psychologist Peter argues that our children, if free to pursue their own interests through play, will not only learn all they need to know, but will do so with energy and passion. Children come into this world burning to learn, equipped with the curiosity, playfulness, and sociability to direct their own education. Yet we have squelched such instincts in a school model originally developed to indoctrinate, not to promote intellectual growth.

FabNewport, a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization dedicated to liberating the maker intrinsic in all of us. “Sure, We teach people how to make stuff,” says Steve Heath, FabNewport’s Chief Catalyst, “but we are most interested in equipping children with the skills and confidence to make their lives.”

FabNewport runs high school classes in Newport and Providence. They run after school programming in their Newport fab lab and work with schools around Rhode Island to implement Maker Centered Learning. They are funded through contracts, grants, gifts and workshops.
