A 29-year-old woman is fighting for her life after a serious car accident on Ocean Drive in Newport early Wednesday.
Newport police rushed to the scene at Ocean Drive and Hazard Road around 12:43 a.m. on March 26 after reports of screeching tires and a loud crash.
Officers found a 2001 white Toyota Corolla against a tree, with major front-end damage and both airbags deployed.
The driver, a woman from Fall River, Massachusetts, was unconscious and trapped in the car. Emergency crews from Newport and Middletown Fire Departments had to cut her out of the wreckage.
She was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital with severe injuries to her legs and pelvis. As of the latest update, she remains unconscious and in critical condition.
A 39-year-old man from Taunton, Massachusetts, who was a passenger in the car, was found outside the vehicle. He was also taken to Rhode Island Hospital with upper body injuries and is now in stable condition.
Lt. Joseph C. Carroll, who handles public information and community policing for Newport PD, says both people in the car were reportedly wearing seatbelts when the crash happened.
“We’re still investigating this accident,” Carroll said in a statement Wednesday morning.
The cause of the crash isn’t clear yet. Police are asking anyone with information about what happened to contact the Newport Police Department.
