Winslow Homer, John La Farge, and the influence of Japanese Art
When the Museum organized an Art Excursion to the Harvard Art Museums last fall, we happened upon an unexpected grouping of works on display in the galleries. A color landscape print of the Adirondack mountains by Winslow Homer was paired with two prints by major Japanese printmakers, Hiroshige and Hokusai. The stylistic and technical influences of Japanese printmaking on Homer’s work was unmistakable. Homer was friends with fellow artist John La Farge, whose stained glass work is well known in Newport. An avid admirer and collector of Japanese art, La Farge may have been responsible for introducing Homer to Japanese art. Fascinating! The Newport Art Museum is pleased to welcome Ms. Wai Yee Chiong, who was responsible for the curation of the grouping we enjoyed at the Harvard Art Museums. Now the Assistant Curator of Asian Art at the RISD Museum, Ms. Chiong will explore works by Homer and La Farge, comparing them to Japanese prints and paintings in the Newport and RISD Art Museums collections, some of which are currently on view in “paperwork: Works on Paper from the Permanent Collection” and “Complex Terrain(s).”
Join us on Zoom for a live lecture with images, followed by Q&A with Ms. Chiong.
