FirstWorks is proud to premiere this stunning live performance film created by Taiwanese jazz artist Vincent Hsu (徐崇育) and his ensemble Soy La Ley Afro-Cuban Jazz Band (古巴爵士樂團). Born in Changhua, Taiwan, Hsu is an award-winning bassist and composer whose music style fuses jazz and Afro-Cuban music with his Taiwanese roots, so as to lead the audience in experiencing the unpredictability of jazz improvisation through Afro-Cuban rhythms. How has – and is – jazz changing the world? The spectacular sweep of “Jazz Changed…”, with impeccable sound and imagery, blends every day and traditional life with unique locations of the island nation of Taiwan. The film is a thrilling tribute to this uniquely African-American artform, as well as an acknowledgement of the indelible impact it has left on people and societies around the world. Also featured are interview clips with prominent musicians and scholars, including Hsu’s mentor, the legendary bassist Cecil McBee, historian Loren Schoenberg, drummer and educator Jerome Jennings, and poet and writer Naomi Extra.

FirstWorks joins the Taipei Cultural Center in New York and New Orleans Jazz Museum in presenting this debut.
