“It’s 1963. It’s before Betty Friedan wrote the Feminine Mystique. It’s after the end of WW2 – when women were forced out of their jobs and back into full time domestic duties. It’s a dilemma for a lot of women. They want more. They don’t want to cook every day. They don’t want to handle all the domestic responsibilities by themselves. They don’t like the assumption that they should like it. That they “should” be happy. That they “have it all.” We say “Just hold one minute there folks…we just may think AND DO otherwise.”
Who exactly IS this WomensWork Theatre Collaborative?
MISSION: WomensWork Theatre Collaborative is a Rhode Island non-profit corporation working to promote leadership roles for women in the theatre – on stage and off. Our major focus is to create opportunities for women over the age of 40. We believe that the experiences of older women matter, that our voices deserve to be heard, and that our stories need to be told.
Our ever-evolving goals include, but are not limited to:
• More roles for women, specifically older women
• More opportunities for women playwrights and women’s stories
• More women in creative leadership and decision-making roles
• More places where women are welcome to make their own work
WHAT NOT TO COOK: An original theatre piece developed by WomensWork Theatre Collaborative to honor our women warrior ancestors.
