Newport City Hall

The Newport City Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall, 43 Broadway, with an agenda that includes Black History Month recognitions, zoning ordinance amendments, and several new business licenses.

The meeting will open with a proclamation recognizing Black History Month and citations for 13 community members, including Gionna Michel, Latisha Michel, Angela Lima, Barbara Jenkins, Pauline Perkins-Moye, Marlin DaCruz, Sierra Jones, Veronica Bourget-Callandret, Barbara Winters, Cheryl Robinson, Fern Lima, Akeia de Barros Gomes and Merrie Scott. Perkins-Moye will also receive a Key to the City.

The council will hold a public hearing on a series of proposed zoning ordinance amendments, including changes to parking regulations, definitions and special use permit requirements affecting waterfront business and general business districts. All are on first reading.

Among the licenses before the council is a new victualing license for Ocean and Fifth Café at 7 Carroll Ave. and another for Mortadella Head at 476 Thames St. The Landing at 30 Bowens Wharf is also seeking a victualing license expansion to recognize the addition of more than 1,300 square feet of outdoor service area and a new accessory bar structure.

The Aquidneck Community Table is seeking a farmer’s market license to operate on Memorial Boulevard between Edgard Court and Chapel Street on Wednesdays from May 6 through Oct. 28.

Under resolutions, the council will consider a measure opposing Gov. Dan McKee’s proposal to increase cruise ship passenger fees, a partnership between the Newport Beach Commission and Salve Regina University to study the economic impact of Easton’s Beach, and a continued discussion on speed camera revenue and the school restricted fund.

The council will also take up the city’s Capital Improvement Program for fiscal years 2027-2031 and consider an amendment to the residential parking permit ordinance.

Following the regular meeting, the council will convene as the Board of License Commissioners to consider The Landing’s application to expand its Class BV alcoholic beverage license.
