Newport, RI – As City crews work to clear felled branches and tree limbs resulting from Tuesday’s heavy thunderstorms, Newport property owners are being reminded that any yard waste longer than 3 feet and over 4 inches in diameter can be dropped off free of charge at the Waste Management Transfer Station on Halsey Street.

City crews from the Department of Public Services are currently clearing City-owned trees from public and private properties, with a priority given to ensuring that roads and sidewalks are passable.

Property owners are advised that residential yard waste under 3 feet in length and less than 4 inches in diameter and can be bundled and tied, placed in paper yard waste bags or placed loose in barrels (maximum of 20 bags/bundles/barrels) for pickup next week.

Yard waste exceeding 20 bags or bundles may also be dropped off free of charge at the Waste Management Transfer Station and is not counted as one of the two free dumps offered to residential property owners. If you are unable to transport the materials yourself, you may contract with a private contractor.

Please note that whether transporting yourself, or through a third party, property owners must be with the load upon arrival at the transfer station and provide a government issued photo ID and proof of residency such as a tax bill or water bill in order to avoid disposal fees. Resident non-property owners are also entitled to a 30 percent discount on the Waste Management scale rate. If possible, renters are encouraged to contact their landlord to hire a private contractor to remove and transport excess or oversized debris.
