Mr. Norman Soares, age 91, of Middletown, RI, passed away at home on January 12, 2019.
Norman was born in Newport, RI on April 27, 1927 to the late Antone R. Soares, Jr. and Helen (Johnston) Soares. He was the husband of the late Flora (Figueiredo) Soares for 67 years.
He enlisted in the US Navy at age 17 and served during World War II. He saw all corners of the world during his service, crossing the equator, Alaska, and Japan. He was recalled in the Navy again during the Korean War for a total of seven years’ service. Upon returning home he began work at US Rubber in Bristol, which then became Kaiser Aluminum in Portsmouth. He retired after a 36 year career as a welder.
Norman was an avid horseman, he raised, trained and showed his own horses and was a member of the RI Horseman’s Association. He loved animals and farm life, lessons learned from growing up on his grandfather’s farm. He was also an avid camper, and a member of campers RI Quahog Chapter.
Norman is survived by his children Norman “Dusty” Soares and his wife April of Newport, Tracey Soares and his wife Heidi of Middletown, Cyndi Haskell and her husband Michael of Fall River, MA, and Susan Ribera of Newport. He also leaves five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Flora and three brothers, Edward Soares, John Francis Murphy, and Anthony Soares.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, January 15 from 4:00-8:00pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 16 with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00am in St. Lucy’s Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Columba Cemetery.
