UPDATE: Anglo-American Baseball Project hopes to host World War I baseball game at Cardines Field on Fourth of July

The Anglo-American Baseball Project (AABP) has announced that they will present a World War I baseball game at Cardines Field in Newport on July 4th, 2018, in cooperation with the U.S. Naval War College.

Update & Correction: An earlier version of this story was titled “World War I baseball game to be held at Cardines Field on Fourth of July”. After seeing the events and details published, confirming the event with Jim Leeke, Cofounder of The Anglo-American Baseball Project, and talking with him about it on What’sUpNewp Radio Edition on AM 1540 WADK earlier today, What’sUpNewp has learned that the event details are apparently still in the works. Mike Falcone from Newport Gulls organization contacted What’sUpNewp earlier today and shared that the paperwork and details had not yet been finalized. What’sUpNewp hear back from Mr. Leeke later in the day – “I understand you’ve heard from Mike Falcone of the Newport Gulls. I jumped the gun in talking with you about the July 4 game today. This was a miscommunication and misunderstanding on my part. My apologies for the confusion. We all believe the WWI game will happen on July 4, but the paperwork isn’t yet complete”.

We’ll provide futher details on this story, as things are finalized and communicated to us.

The mission of the AABP with this game is to recreate the historic military baseball game that was cheered by King George V at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea, during World War One, exactly 100 years later.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the proceeds from the event will support veterans groups in the US and UK.

First known as Basin Field, the site of Cardines Filed was used for sandlot baseball as early as 1908. The ballpark is named for U.S. Army Private Bernardo Cardines, Newport’s first battlefield casualty of WWI. This historic park is home to the Newport Gulls of the New England Collegiate Baseball League and the George S. Donnelly Sunset League.
