Newport County’s population estimate now stands at 82,784, down 132 from the projection made last year.

The Census Bureau on Thursday released 2016 population estimates for each town, county, and state in the United States. The estimates, done annually, reflect population change from July 2015 to July 2016.

Rhode Island’s population grew by just 819 people between July 2015 and July 2016. The state has seen an increase of 3,089 people since 2010 estimates, with an estimate of 1,053,337 in 2010 compared to 1,056,426 in 2016. Newport, Warwick, and Pawtucket all lost residents in the most recent annual estimate, with Newport losing 132 residents. Since the last estimate in 2010, Newport has lost 188 residents an Newport County has lost 400 residents.

2016 marks the highest population estimate Rhode Island has seen since 2010, while Newport County and Newport both saw their highest population estimate in 2010.
