Tyler’s Two Cents: Thoughts from Behind the Bar is a weekly lifestyle column, written by Tyler Bernadyn.

Dear Summer,

I know that I will miss you far more than you will miss me. Once again, you have come and blessed my life with 12 weeks of love and laughter, only to leave me again in September. It’s fleeting, the time we share each year, but it’s exciting to consider the possibilities for the future and reminisce over times past. Reasons, like seasons, are always changing but you already know the origin of my appreciation and the place I keep for you in my heart.

Your presence helps my home prosper, as thousands of people flock to Newport during your tenure. Your company allows many residents to make their livelihood and prepare accordingly for your impending exit. The shops, restaurants, beaches and bars are at their busiest and best when you visit and although the bustling will frustrate some, this community relies on you for our well-being.

Even though I work countless hours during your three-month residency, I will never forget or take for granted the good times we’ve shared. Our trips to Reject’s beach, our vacations to Block Island, our scooter cruises around the Ocean Drive are not in vain. You’ve helped me appreciate the little things in life and for that I could not be more thankful.

Consistency was key this year Summer, as your weather stayed constant and the rain stayed in the clouds. When it’s sunny, we pray for snow. When it’s snowing, we beg for sun. Please forgive us Summer, as New Englanders it’s in our nature to complain. Even during your hottest and most humid days, I found solace while swimming in the ocean and enjoying your cool coastal breeze.

Although I know it’s time for your departure, I can feel you holding on with everything you have. These warm days and cool nights are not an anomaly but rather a reminder that our time together is wearing thin. Fall is quickly approaching and inevitably, people will be anxious for her arrival. Pumpkin beer, flannel shirts, corn mazes and football will soon replace flip-flops, beach days, bike rides and late nights.

Newport loves Fall, as we should, but please don’t think we’ve forgotten about you. After your season, it’s necessary that we share some time apart. Three months straight of sleepless nights, 60 hour work weeks and unmannerly tourists will break just about anyone who lives in this town. Summer, please don’t fret. Before you know it, we’ll be begging for you once unforgiving Winter comes to visit. When we’re buried in snow and everyone is in a hibernation state of mind, we’ll look back to the good times we shared and count down the days until your arrival next year.

I can’t thank you enough for everything that you do for me. You’ve help me develop a life that I love and you give me something to look forward to each and every year. You’ve taught me to enjoy the beauty that surrounds me on a daily basis. You’ve shown me that although our time together is brief, we can create memories that will last a lifetime. I love you Summer and I can’t wait to see you again next year.
